AI is everywhere—from diagnosing diseases to decoding nature’s secrets. But what is AI, and what does it cost to create these powerful systems? Join us for three fascinating talks that explore the world of artificial intelligence! We’ll start with an introduction to AI, unpacking how it works and its hefty computational price tag. Then, dive into real-world applications—how AI is revolutionizing medicine and ecology. Grab a pint, meet the experts, and discover how AI is shaping our world!

Can we afford AI (and the rest of computing)?

Simon Dobson (Professor of Computer Science)
Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are taking the world by storm. They provide ways of solving problems that are difficult (or impossible) to address using conventional programming. But they do so at potentially enormous costs in terms of their accuracy and reliability, their use as surveillance technologies, their power consumption and use of other resources such as water. If we are going to deploy AI widely, fairly, and sustainably, we need a clear-eyed discussion on the benefits, opportunities, costs, and threats that these technologies pose to our planet and society.

AI, a new ally to understand neurodegenerative disease

Illary Allodi (Lecturer in Systems Neuroscience)
The central nervous system contains billions of neurons that connect and communicate to each other with specific patterns. This complicated system allows us to move in our environment, respond to stimuli, as well as think about the world we perceive. Neurodegenerative diseases disrupt the entirety of this system by attacking specific cells and the way they communicate with each other. This can lead to neurological symptoms. In our work, we use AI to help us understand how the degeneration of these cells happens overtime and to find potential new avenues to slow down the degradation process.

Studying Animals Using AI: How technology helps us spy on wildlife

Amber Cowans (PhD researcher)
Ever wondered what animals do when no one is watching? From shy pine martens to endangered capercaillies, studying wildlife without disturbing them is a challenge, but AI is transforming how we observe nature. Using motion-activated cameras and audio devices, I capture thousands of images and recordings in the Scottish Highlands. We'll explore how AI helps identify species and even try the BirdNet app—so bring your phone and get ready to eavesdrop on the wild!
