Join us for an evening exploring the intersection of nature and history. First, we'll dive into the role of saltmarshes in storing carbon, focusing on restoration efforts in the Humber Estuary through nature based solutions and rewilding. Then, explore the world of Maritime Archaeology, uncovering how human activities have shaped this dynamic field and its major discoveries. A perfect blend of environmental science and cultural heritage!

Carbon Storage of Humber Estuary Restored Saltmarshes
Charlie Trotman
(PhD Researcher)
Saltmarshes are being increasingly recognised as important in storing marine (blue) carbon. Due to historical losses of saltmarsh in the Humber Estuary, there have been a number of saltmarsh restoration projects using nature-based solutions and rewilding. This study focuses on both blue and green carbon in the sediments of three sites on the Humber Estuary; managed realignment sites, in different stages of development, and one naturally formed saltmarsh.

An Introduction to Maritime Archaeology
Katerina Velentza
(PDRA)
Maritime Archaeology is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field encompassing all tangible and intangible elements of culture related to human activities on, in and around aquatic environments—inland waters and wetlands, as well as seas and oceans. This talk will provide an introduction to the field, how and when it was created, significant underwater discoveries that shaped it, the various significant research areas that the discipline covers, and where it stands in the 21st century.
