How do food, culture, and mental health shape how we see ourselves? Join us for three powerful talks exploring the hidden sides of eating and body image. Learn why binge eating often goes undetected, how exercise can reshape not just our bodies but our brains, and how South Asian women in the UK navigate beauty standards and identity. A night of science, stories, and challenging assumptions about what it means to be "healthy."
Binge eating - can you spot it?
Stella Kozmer
(NIHR SPCR PhD Candidate)
Binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa often go unnoticed, even in primary care. Many sufferers struggle in silence, their symptoms misunderstood or dismissed. But what if we could spot the signs earlier and improve treatment? How could we improve it in primary care? Join us for a deep dive into how we identify and manage these conditions, the challenges faced by GPs, and how we can bridge the gap in care. Whether you work in healthcare or are just curious, this talk will change the way you think about eating disorders. Come for the science, stay for the conversation

You can't outrun your fork. But that doesn't mean exercise can't you improve your diet
Cassandra Lowe
(Lecturer, Department of Psychology, University of Exeter)
Exercise is the best thing you can do for your health. Exercise can also help us make better dietary choices and potentially lose weight, but not in the way most people think. We often use exercise as a weight loss tool to "offset" calories consumed. This creates a toxic relationship with exercise where we either engage in exercise we don't enjoy or overdo it leading to injury. In this talk, I will discuss the ways in which regular exercise, of all kinds, can improve the brain systems that help us make healthier dietary decisions and reduce our intake of high-calorie "junk foods".

"You can't be too skinny. You can't be too fat. I don't know what you are supposed to be" Body image experiences of South Asian women in the UK
Fidan Turk
(Lecturer)
In this talk, I will explore how cultural, societal, and personal factors shape the way South Asian women in the UK perceive their bodies. From beauty standards to family expectations and media representation, I will discuss the unique pressures they face and their impact on identity.
