Electrical stimulation is being increasingly used for a wide range of health applications including paralysis, bladder function and even brain function! And what do we do when our immune system goes wrong in cases of autoimmunity when it starts fighting itself? Find out more about how cutting edge techniques work and are being applied to benefit those with serious health conditions.
Hack Your Immunity: The T cell revolution for autoimmune diseases
Simon Eastham
(Research Associate – University of Bristol)
Your incredible immune system protects you daily from a wide range of germs and bugs, but what happens when it goes wrong and starts attacking your own body? This talk will cover current research into how we can hack the immune system by targeting T cells to reduce the effects of an overactive immune system in patients suffering from conditions such as arthritis and lupus.

Can Zapping Ourselves with Electrical Stimulation Lead to Advances in Healthcare?

The electric torpedo fish capable of generating 100-150 volts are reported to have been used topically to relieve headaches as early as 400 B.C. Torpedo fish were also reportedly used to treat haemorrhoids! Thankfully this method of application has been lost to the history books. By the 1700’s people had started experimenting with using electrical stimulation to treat paralysis. Since initial earlier attempts, the technology used to deliver electrical stimulation has become increasingly sophisticated. Join us for a stimulating interactive talk about current research examining the use of electrical stimulation in healthcare to help support people with paralysis in their walking and arm functioning as well as improve bowel functioning.
