Mum, Dad, donor: Mitochondrial disease and designer babies
Dr Csanad Bachrati
(Associate Professor, School of Natural Sciences)
In 2015, the UK made history by allowing the creation of "three-parent babies," a groundbreaking move that made it the first country in the world to approve a special in vitro fertilisation procedure. This innovative technique involves using DNA from a mother, father, and donor to prevent mitochondrial diseases. With the first baby born in 2023, what is the science behind this revolutionary approach? We'll explore the science behind this procedure, the role of mitochondria, mitochondrial DNA, and how certain mutations cause devastating diseases.

Lonely in the locker room: Is sport always a place for social connection?
Dr Trish Jackman
(Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise Psychology, School of Psychology Sport Science & Wellbeing)
Sport is often seen as a place of community, teamwork, and belonging—but is that always the case? While many people find connection through sport, others experience deep loneliness, even in the midst of a team. In this talk, we’ll dive into our latest research on loneliness in sport, exploring its impact on mental health, who is most at risk, and what can be done to create more inclusive, supportive sporting environments. Join us as we challenge the assumption that sport always brings people together.
