How do we see the world through someone else’s eyes? What happens to our minds as we grow older? And how can we use something as simple as food to understand mental health experiences? This interactive evening explores the mind from different angles—through creative, hands-on psychological research, through the lens of ageing and brain health, and through the science of how we connect with others. Come along to discover how our brains work, how they change, and how science is making mental health research more inclusive and relatable for everyone.

The Impact of Ageing on Your Brain: How Blood Vessels Matter

Dr Valia Rodríguez Rodríguez (Clinical Neurophysiologist)
As we get older, we notice changes in our bodies, but our brains go through changes too. In this talk, I’ll explain how ageing affects our brains and why healthy blood vessels are so important for keeping our minds sharp. Our brains need a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which are delivered by a network of blood vessels. As we age, these vessels don’t work as well as they used to. This can make it harder to remember things, think clearly, walk with confidence or even increase the chance of problems like stroke or dementia. The good news is that we can do something about it! By understanding how blood vessels affect our brain health, we can make simple lifestyle changes to keep them healthy. In this talk, I’ll cover how blood vessels support brain function, what to look out for if something isn’t right, and easy tips to keep your blood vessels—and your brain—in great shape. The bottom line? Taking care of your blood vessels helps you stay mentally sharp and enjoy a better quality of life as you age. Come along to learn how small changes can make a big difference for your brain health!

Seeing the World Through Others' Minds: Does cognition shape social interactions?

Katerina Michalaki (PhD Researcher)
Understanding what other people see and think is fundamental to successful social interaction. This talk explores two abilities that allow individuals to “see through others’ minds”: imagining how the world appears from another’s point of view and interpreting the content of their beliefs. These skills depend on mental abilities that help us stay focused, control our reactions, and switch between different thoughts or perspectives. We will show how these abilities work together, helping us navigate social situations and connect with others effectively.
