From the Steppes to Colchester: Isotope analysis and origins.
Ben Holloway
(Project Officer; Colchester Archaeological Trust)
As part of the Colchester garrison redevelopment, excavations at Mearnee Barracks identified a late Roman/early Saxon cemetery group. The group included a number of adult inhumation burials including two males complete with spears and shields, and the two women with beads and knives. Initial analysis for one of the female burials suggested an unusual ancestry possible originating on the Russian steppes. This presentation outlines how isotope analysis techniques were used to explore these potential origins.
