A Toast to Clarity: Fun Facts, Myths, and the Truth About Alcohol
Dr Media Zanganeh
(Lecturer in Pharmacy Clinical and Professional Practice, Medway School of Pharmacy)
My research explores a new way to detect the effects of alcohol exposure during pregnancy, which can lead to Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). FASD causes learning, behavioural, and physical challenges, yet diagnosis is often complex and delayed. I study tiny building blocks in our body (or proteins) called aminopeptidases that may serve as biological ‘clues’ for earlier and more accurate identification. My goal is to develop a simple, non-invasive, and affordable test to improve early diagnosis and support for affected children. I am also interested in how alcohol-related lifestyle factors impact health and contribute to conditions beyond FASD.
I will include interactive activities such as a “Guess the Units” challenge, where the audience will estimate the alcohol units in popular drinks, followed by a reveal and discussion. I’ll also run a “Fact or Fiction” quiz to debunk common alcohol myths. I will demonstrate how easy it is to misjudge serving sizes and highlight the importance of understanding alcohol consumption. The session will end with practical takeaways on responsible drinking.

Healing Herbs: Using Food as Medicine
Dr Sukvinder Bhamra
(Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Clinical and Professional Practice, Medway School of Pharmacy)
My research focuses on herbal medicines—exploring their traditional uses and health benefits. I investigate how natural products can complement modern medicine, ensuring safety, efficacy, and sustainable sourcing. By analysing scientific evidence and traditional knowledge, I aim to bridge the gap between herbal and pharmaceutical treatments, promoting integrative healthcare solutions.
I will host a hands-on session “Guess the Herb” where the audience can interact with common medicinal herbs—smelling, touching, and learning about their traditional and scientific uses. A short presentation will highlight the history, active compounds, and effectiveness of key herbs.
