Ever wondered about the sights and sounds of space?
Join us to find out what the James Webb telescope is telling us about the Universe, how galaxies themselves can act as telescopes, and what a gravitational wave sounds like.

The Sounds of Spacetime
Professor Tessa Baker
(Professor of Cosmology, University of Portsmouth)
This talk will introduce you to gravitational waves - tiny ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by merging black holes. What are these waves, what produces them, how do we detect them, and what they can tell us about the universe?

The James Webb Space Telescope: Peering Back in Time
Sophie Newman
(PhD student in Astrophysics, University of Portsmouth)
Discover how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is transforming our view of the cosmos. By capturing light from billions of years ago, JWST lets us peer back in time to the universe’s earliest galaxies, stars, and planets. Join us for a journey through stunning images, groundbreaking discoveries, and a glimpse into the origins of everything.

Cosmic telescopes. Looking at the Universe through gravitational lenses
Dr Giovanni Granata
(Research Fellow in Strong Gravitational Lensing, University of Portsmouth)
Albert Einstein predicted the most massive galaxies and clusters of galaxies in the Universe significantly warp space-time, bending the path of light rays coming from other galaxies in the background and creating a magnifying effect. We call this phenomenon gravitational lensing, as it turns galaxies into cosmic telescopes. Join us to explore gravitational lensing, and discover how we can use it to observe much deeper in the early Universe, uncovering the secrets of galaxy formation and learning about the nature of dark matter.
