Join us for a thought-provoking talk on the fusion of art and physics, featuring theoretical physicist David Berman and curator of arts Ana Prendes. For this event, Dr Berman will discuss why we need collaboration between art and science. Artist Ian Douglass will also present his practice, which draws from scientific inquiry, spiritual speculation, and the history of painting to explore the mysteries between form and void.

Together, they’ll explore how creativity connects scientific inquiry and artistic expression.

The Stories of Science and Art

Professor David Berman (Professor in Theoretical Physics)
Science and the arts are often viewed as being completely the opposite of one another - but can science and art be combined to make something completely new? David Berman is a theoretical physicist who has been working in the arts and with artists for over 20 years. He was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2004, part of the Cartier Award winning team at Frieze art fair 2009, long term collaborator and co-exhibitor with Turner prize winner Grenville Davey and a regular speaker on the interaction between science and the arts. In this talk he will explore the goals, ideas and rationale of art and science collaborations.

Alchemies of Belief

Ian Douglass (Artist & Writer)
Artist Ian Douglass will present his practice, which centers around questions of belief, from scientific inquiry to spiritual speculation. Drawing equally from critical research, quantum physics, the dub structure, and alchemy, his work lives at the limits of knowledge and the edge of madness. Probing painting’s origins as shadow, he questions the reality of material and material of reality. Ian graduated from the Royal College of art with an MA in Painting in 2023. His first institutional solo exhibition 'The State of Things (Sulphur)' is on view at Akku Kunstplattform in Lucerne, Switzerland through May 18.
