Wildlife detectives: Exploring new strategies to fight wildlife crime
Dr Desiré Lee Dalton
(Lecturer in Forensics)
What if the victim of a crime is not a human but rather an animal or even a plant? Although wildlife crime remains one of the greatest threats to wildlife populations, successful prosecution and convictions are still low. This talk will take a deep dive into available modern technology that can be used to combat wildlife crime: from analysing DNA to determine the age of an animal to finding out where exactly in the world the animal or plant was taken from.
One person with two DNA profiles?
Dr Nur Haliza Hassan
(Lecturer in Forensic Science)
In this talk, we will delve into the fascinating phenomenon of human chimeras—unique individuals who possess two distinct types of DNA within their bodies. This intriguing condition presents a significant challenge for investigators, as the presence of two sets of DNA profiles can lead to misunderstandings and erroneous conclusions during forensic investigation.
